Sophomore right-handed pitcher Tegan Kuhns (1-0) started for Tennessee on opening day Friday. No. 15 Tennessee (1-0) defeated Nicholls (0-1), 10-0, in an eight-inning run-rule decision.

Kuhns pitched 6.2 innings and recorded eight strikeouts. He totaled 86 pitches, including 54 strikes, against 23 batters. The 6-foot-3, 189-pound sophomore allowed two hits, one walk, one wild pitch and zero hits against the Colonels.

“It meant absolutely everything to me,” Kuhns said of starting for Tennessee on opening day. “It was a pleasure by E (Josh Elander) that he could trust me in doing that, so it was awesome. It was everything I expected.”

Nicholls hit seven groundouts and five flyouts against Kuhns.

“I was laying my change up, my slider was good, my heater was playing,” he said of his performance.
