The NFL has always been criticized for how quiet its trade deadline can be and for lacking major trades like those in the NBA or MLB. One way they can make these splash trades may be coming into the fold, though, according to one NFL insider.

ESPN's Adam Schefter was on The Pat McAfee Show discussing several points coming out of Super Bowl week. One talking point had the ears of listeners perk up as he hinted that there may be a discussion to allow teams to trade draft picks five years out, compared to the three years they are currently limited to.

Schefter explained, “But the funny thing is I had a conversation with somebody about that this week. And I'm gonna tell you right now there are going to be people in the NFL this offseason that push to have that limit grown to five years. There is going to be a push by at least one team this offseason to extend the NFL trade limits from three years of picks to five years of picks.”

In the NBA, trading picks that far out has allowed some teams to fully embrace tanking as they gather up these picks. Some teams have even done this while winning, but in the NFL, will they be able to show this much flexibility? We already see some years when teams jockey for position to move back or pack up picks for the following year.

Would this be that much of a change? Only time will tell.
