Italy upset Team USA on Tuesday, 8-6, to improve to 3-0 and get closer to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The European team arrived in the game after shooting Brazil out, 8-0, and taking care of Great Britain, 7-4.
Team USA beat Brazil, 15-5, Great Britain, 9-1, and Mexico, 5-3. They appeared set to dominate Italy and advance to the quarterfinals, but things went south. “Jomboy” broke down how all the things that could go wrong for the U.S went wrong, starting with manager Mark DeRosa assuming they advanced to the next round with the win over Mexico.

“It’s weird,” DeRosa said ahead of the Italy game. “We want to win this game, even though our ticket’s punched to the quarterfinals.”
With DeRosa mistakenly assuming that they didn’t need to do anything else to advance, the players got themselves loose. The celebration after the victory got out of hand, which affected their performance on the field.
“Jomboy” added that Paul Goldschmidt was the fifth-worst of 155 qualified hitters against right-handed pitchers in MLB last season, but still started against Michael Lorenzen. The late changes also affected the team’s performance, as they came in the seventh inning.

Once the game ended, Mark DeRosa spoke about his viral quote. He clarified that he didn’t know the team could still be eliminated after going up 3-0.
“I misspoke… Completely misread the calculations,” DeRosa told reporters.
It was an embarrassing night for Team USA. They entered the 6th inning down 8-0. Italy scored three unearned run to go up 8-0, before the Americans started taking the game more seriously. Now, their fate is in the hands of Wednesday’s game between Italy and Mexico.
