EATON RAPIDS, Mich. (WLNS) — After taking down Fowlerville and Portland in the regional round on Wednesday, the Greyhounds hoisted a division two regional title for the first time in eight years.
Going into the final round at 132 pounds, Eaton Rapids only led Portland by two points. That’s when sophomore Brayden Thorn stepped to the mat for Eaton Rapids.
With only a few seconds left in the match, Thorn got a take down and pinned his opponent securing the team win for the Greyhounds.
Thorn was battling a sickness most of the week leading up to regional but was determined to not let anything stop him from helping his team.
“It’s a special feeling,” said Thorn. “I’ve gone against them a few times this year. I’ve put in the work all year and wanted it to come down to me.”
Eaton Rapids had five wrestlers who won by pinfall which included Jeremiah Klink wrestling at 138 pounds, Nolan Saltman at 157, Gavin Sebastian at 175, J.J. Hackworth at 113 and finished up with Thorn.
Eaton Rapids wrestling coach Devin Milheim says his team learned a lot from their tough dual schedule this season which helped prepare them for postseason play and what they experienced in the regional final.
“We’ve been working really hard all season,” said Milheim. “It’s a team effort, the boys battled. “They deserve it, we busted our butts all year. They (Portland) beat us earlier in the year. We made some adjustment we continued to work and came out on top.”
Eaton Rapids will now face New Boston Huron in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals will take place on February 27th at 6:45p.m. at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo, MI.
