Team Canada has turned to a familiar but debated blue liners, selecting Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse for the 2026 IIHF Men’s World Championship. The announcement, first reported by Darren Dreger on X, comes days after the Edmonton Oilers exited the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs in the first round.

“Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse added to Team Canada’s roster,” Dreger wrote, confirming a decision that blends elite offensive upside with lingering defensive concerns.

The duo carries a combined $116 million commitment in Edmonton, with Bouchard on a four-year, $42 million deal and Nurse in year six of an eight-year, $74 million contract.

Now, they step into a short tournament setting beginning May 15 in Switzerland, where Canada opens against Sweden men’s national ice hockey team.

Offensive value vs defensive risk for Canada

Bouchard’s regular-season production remains elite. He recorded 95 points, including 21 goals and 74 assists, finishing among league leaders for defencemen. His plus-minus rating stood at 25, reflecting strong puck possession with balanced defense on paper. However, at times, analysts have questioned his defense.

In the playoffs, that balance shifted. Bouchard posted 6 points in six games but had a -7 rating, and is known for allowing turnovers.

Nurse’s numbers tell a different story. He produced 24 points in the regular season with a -12 rating, while adding zero points in six playoff games. His defense has often come into question, despite his high $9.25M AAV. Discipline is also an issue, with 104 penalty minutes impacting team structure.

From a Team Canada perspective, the selection suggests a clear priority. The tournament often rewards puck-moving defencemen who can drive offense from the back end. Bouchard fits that profile perfectly. Meanwhile, Nurse, despite struggles, brings size, skating, and experience in heavy minutes. Still, his role is debatable.

International play can mask weaknesses seen in a long NHL season. The smaller sample size and varied competition levels often favor skill over structure. That could benefit both players, especially Bouchard, whose offensive instincts translate well on larger ice.

However, the decision still carries risk. Canada’s recent international results, like their loss in the 2026 Winter Olympics gold medal game, have shown that defensive lapses can be costly in single-elimination games. Pairing high-risk defenders requires strong forward support and disciplined systems.

Additionally, this selection serves as a reset opportunity. Both players come off a disappointing playoff exit where Edmonton struggled to protect leads and control defensive play. A strong showing could restore confidence and reshape narratives heading into next season.

For Team Canada, the bet is clear. They are prioritizing upside over caution. If Bouchard drives offense and Nurse stabilizes his game, the pairing could work. If not, the same issues that hurt Edmonton could resurface on the international stage.
