Desmond Bane has two main jobs these days. He's relied on to stretch the floor for the Orlando Magic as their starting two guard, but also serves as Chief Basketball Officer at TCU, his alma mater.
Bane recently sat down with Front Office Sports (subscription required) to discuss out-of-control spending on NIL in college basketball.
"Whether it’s $10 million, $20 million, whatever the number is, so donors know exactly how much money needs to be given each year, coaches know how much money they have to spend each year, and you can start building out an archetype from that. Once they get the reins on it, it’s already a great thing, but it will really settle in," Bane said about his idea for a college basketball salary cap.
As a current player and former college basketball hooper himself, Bane likes the idea of athlete compensation, but just wants to have an established structure surrounding NIL finances.
“I think NIL’s a great thing,” Bane said. “I think players deserve to get paid. All the work they’re putting in, all the money they bring in to the school. I think they definitely deserve a slice of the pie. But with that being said, I think there needs to be some sort of cap, so teams all kind of have somewhat of a level playing field."
Bane averaged over 12 points per game on over 43% shooting from downtown during his four-year career with TCU.
