So then do you think Haden is still a top 5 pick? Many thought he was before yesterday, then he ran slow, measured small and now many think he slipped maybe out of the top 15. As one guy said it's not unusual for a top CB to be small or a step slower than expected at the combine, but it's VERY unusual for a top CB to be BOTH smaller and slower.

Haden's agent is already saying he'll run better at his pro day, I'm guessing his agent has been around the block and knows that the slow 40 time cost his client some cash and the best way to get it back, is to run a faster 40. Everyone thinks the kid can play, but his 40 time hurt him.

He would be one of the ones who was too slow and small and didn't fall in the "normal range" for his position so yes it hurt his status. Had he been that slow but 6-1 it wouldn't have hurt him nearly as much however. Also, I never thought he was a top 5 pick. Bradford, Clausen, McCoy, Suh, Okung, and Berry were the only ones I ever thought had a shot at the top 5.

Again I wasn't saying 40 time doesn't matter just that most 40 times aren't the deciding factor in drafting a guy unless they deviate to the extreme. As that pertained to the original topic, if Mays officially was a 4.43 he would not have hurt himself at all. Had his official time been in the 4.2s yea he'd help himself a little but not enough to jump ahead of Berry on anyones board except maybe Al Davis.

And I'm not saying he's ahead of Berry either. I'm just saying there is a valid reason NFL teams have them run the 40's, they want a baseline comparison of speed because unless you have a tape that shows Taylor Mays and Eric Berry playing against each other, you don't really know who's faster without a baseline comparison.

I think 40 times are preposterous you can't really expect me to believe Taylor Mays is faster than an Olympic sprinter but if you do the math on his best 40 (which was faster than 4.43) he's faster at 40 yards than most Olympic sprinters. I thought Mayock put it best he said ever since he arrived at USC they've been telling us he can run a sub 4.3 and I never believed it, but now I've seen it for myself and I know he can run with Ford and Holiday, I'm impressed. Guys that big just don't run that fast.
