Michigan football, despite a coaching staff ostensibly more familiar with the West Coast, continues to pick up commits in the Midwest, thanks to a commit from Illinois on Friday, May 22.

Defensive back Tavares Harrington, out of Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, pledged to the Wolverines via social media on Friday. He’s the second Mount Carmel product to go maize-and-blue this month, following four-star wide receiver Quentin Burrell.

Harrington, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound cornerback in the class of 2027, ranks as the seventh-best player in Illinois, 15th-best at his position and 124th overall nationally, per 247 Sports’ composite rankings.

IN THE SECONDARY: Michigan football lands 4-star defensive back Darius Johnson

He picked the Wolverines over multiple Power Four offers, with Alabama, Auburn and Mississippi also making his final four. Harrington is the third defensive back in U-M's class, joining four-star Darius Johnson, who committed out of California earlier this week, and legacy three-star corner Charles Woodson Jr.

The addition of Harrington brings Michigan’s 2027 class to 14 commits; U-M ranks 11th nationally, per 247, but just fifth in the Big Ten, behind Penn State (No. 5), UCLA (No. 7), USC (No. 8 and Ohio State (No. 10).
