Tate Taylor and Mia Maxwell gave the U.S. a sweep of the men's and women's 100m titles at the World U20 Track and Field Championships for the first time in a decade.
Taylor, an 18-year-old from San Antonio, overtook Jamaican Gary Card to take the men's 100m in a personal best 9.94 seconds at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. Card, whose personal best is 9.93, was runner-up Thursday in 10.05.
Taylor is the first American to win the men's 100m at the U20 worlds since Noah Lyles in 2016.
On July 4, Taylor won the 200m at the Prefontaine Classic over a field that included 2024 Olympic gold medalist Letsile Tebogo of Botswana. Tebogo was the only other man to break 10 seconds in a World U20 100m final, running 9.91 in 2022.
About 15 minutes before Taylor's triumph, Mia Maxwell became the first American to win the women's 100m at U20 worlds in a decade.
Maxwell, an 18-year-old from outside Houston, prevailed in 11.14 seconds, holding off charging Jamaican Shanoya Douglas by three hundredths. Mia's twin sister, Mariah, finished fifth in 11.35.
Jamaicans won the previous four women's 100m titles at U20 worlds — Briana Williams in 2018, Tina Clayton in 2021 and 2022 and Alana Reid in 2024.
The last American woman to win was Candace Hill in 2016.
The World U20 Championships continue Friday, live on Peacock at 9:40 a.m. ET (day session) and 5:45 p.m. (night session).
Friday night finals include the men's and women's 400m. Quincy Wilson, who in 2024 became the youngest male Olympic track and field medalist with 4x400m relay gold at 16, was the fastest qualifier into the men's 400m final.
