Detroit — It was supposed to be months. It ended up being weeks.
Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, barely a month after having arthroscopic surgery on his left (pitching) elbow, will return to the rotation Saturday against the Guardians in Cleveland, manager AJ Hinch announced Thursday morning.
Skubal made a rehab start for High-A West Michigan on Sunday, pitching five innings while allowing no runs on two hits and no walks. He struck out six, and touched 99 mph with his fastball.
Skubal has been out since late April, and when it first was announced he needed surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow, surgeons projected a return in late July or August. But the surgery in early May ended up being much less-invasive than originally projected.

Jack Flaherty is set to start the series opener in Cleveland on Friday, while Sunday's starter still is listed as TBD. Casey Mize (groin), who made a rehab start for Low-A Lakeland on Tuesday, is a candidate to make that start.
Justin Verlander (hip) made a rehab start for Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, and was roughed up for four homers. It's unclear when he'll return to the rotation. He's made just one start for the Tigers since re-signing with his original team this offseason.
The Tigers and Minnesota Twins play their series finale Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park.
The Tigers are looking for their third series win this month, after going 6-22 in May.
