The Tampa Bay Rays finally get back in the win column.
After losing 5 straight games, including their first 4 to begin the second half of the season, the Rays win the series opener 7-1 against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Here is what you need to know from the contest.
Victor Mesa Jr. got the party started for the Rays offense on Monday, hitting a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning. It’s his 3rd straight game with a home run.
Some of the other Rays who struggled since the All-Star Break also stepped up in the contest. Jonathan Aranda picked up an RBI Single the following inning, his first since last week. Yandy Diaz also found some luck at the plate as well.
Cedric Mullins and Nick Fortes moved the Rays to 3 homers on the night, and the team scored in 6 of the 9 innings. This is exactly what the Rays offense needed: support from everywhere in the order. Only Richie Palacios was the only Rays batter to not record a hit in the contest.
Nick Martinez gave the starting rotation exactly what they needed. After 4 straight bad outings from the staff, Martinez reminded everyone why he was an All-Star last week. He finished the night going 6 innings strong and only allowing 1 earned run on 6 hits. Surprisingly, he did not record a single strikeout.
Bryan Baker also got his first appearance since the All-Star Break, and although it wasn’t a save opportunity, he still got the job done with a shutout inning.
Now that the 5-game losing streak is over, the longest of the season, the Rays can now get back to worrying about what’s ahead of them. Heading into Tuesday, they hold a slim 1.5-game lead on the New York Yankees for the AL East Division Lead, as well as only up by 6 games on the Boston Red Sox, who won yet again, picking up their 14th straight victory.
Tampa Bay will go for two games in a row, and look to begin a streak in the right direction on Tuesday when they are right back in action against the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre. Drew Rasmussen (7-5, 3.26 ERA) will get the start for the Rays and will face right-hander Kevin Gausman (4-8, 4.33 ERA) for Toronto. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM EST.
