It wasn’t a great start to the second half of the season for the Tampa Bay Rays.
The team fell to the Boston Red Sox 10-0 as they began an 8-game road trip following the All-Star Break. Here is what you need to know from the contest.
It wasn’t the best day on the mound for Griffin Jax on Friday as he gave up a ton of contact. The 31-year-old arguably had the worst game of his season thus far against the Red Sox, allowing 7 earned runs off 8 hits, including a solo homer to Masataka Yoshida.
This is the second game of the season for Jax in which he allowed 6 or more runs in a start, with the last coming in June against the Detroit Tigers. Normally, he has been quite good and one of the reasons the backend of the rotation has been so reliable, his next start will definitely be telling on what possible direction the Rays may take at the upcoming MLB Trade Deadline.
Chris Raycroft was the only true reliever to pitch after Jax in the contest, as they went to a position player in Ben Williamson for the final inning. Raycroft also struggled, giving up 3 earned runs on 5 hits over two innings.
It was not a good day at the plate for the Tampa Bay Rays to begin their second half portion of the regular season. The team only picked up 3 hits in the entire contest, and only one extra-base hit as well.
Taylor Walls hit a double in the top of the eighth inning, and the other two hits were by Ryan Vilade and Junior Caminero.
Caminero getting involved is probably the only bright spot, as he looked to be just fine at the plate as well as at third base after being hit by a pitch that resulted in him leaving Tuesday’s All-Star Game early.
This major shutout needs to be short-lived, as the team will look to bounce back quickly, as they will play the second game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park Friday. Mason Englert (0-2, 3.82) will go for the Rays and will face off against left-hander Eduardo Rivera, who has only logged 7 innings on the season so far. First pitch for Game 2 is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST.
