Trade buzz and speculation have been running rampant ever since T.J. Watt posted the cryptic 'peace out' picture on social media — with several insane draft packages being theorized by analysts, such as Chris Canty’s viral Brock Purdy idea.
According to Canty, the former Raven turned analyst, the 49ers should trade Purdy for Watt amid the recent Pittsburgh Steelers' contractual holdup and use the 11th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to replace their QB. While the trade might make sense for San Francisco — it’s an abysmal idea for Pittsburgh.
Watt is worth at least a first-round and third-round draft pick, while Purdy’s success in his first three years with the 49ers could be attributed to the offensive genius that is HC Kyle Shanahan.
Ever since 'Mr. Irrelevant' entered the league in 2022, critics have tried to downplay his success and argue that the plethora of playmakers, a top-three offensive line, one of the league's best defenses, and Shanahan’s offensive-minded coaching style are why Purdy was so successful — and honestly, those assumptions aren’t completely wrong.
Steelers HC Mike Tomlin’s defense-first mentality would do little to help Purdy — as would the Black and Gold offensive line, which, while boasting incredible talent, just can’t seem to put all the pieces together.
If extending Watt is an impossibility at this point, trading him away for premium draft capital — that could potentially help with acquiring Arch Manning in 2026 — is the route to take, not a scenario involving bringing a system QB into a signal caller’s worst nightmare in Tomlin.
