One spectacular interception can capture attention during training camp. Mike Mickens wants to know what happens during every snap surrounding it. The Baltimore Ravens’ secondary coach said consistency will help determine which young defensive backs earn roster spots and meaningful roles.
Baltimore has established stars in Kyle Hamilton, Nate Wiggins and Marlon Humphrey, but several positions behind them remain open to competition. T.J. Tampa is attempting to establish a larger role as he enters his third season. Bilhal Kone is returning from the knee injury that erased his 2025 campaign, while Robert Longerbeam and other younger defensive backs are trying to earn jobs through defense and special teams.
Mickens relates to those players. A seventh-round selection during his own playing career, he understands how limited opportunities can shape the future of a late-round pick or undrafted free agent. He has been particularly encouraged by Tampa, saying the former fourth-round selection understands the defense and is developing stronger habits.
