According to a new report from ESPN's Peter Thamel and Jeff Borzello, Syracuse University is preparing to name Gerry McNamara its next head coach of men's basketball.

Thamel and Borzello wrote that a deal is expected in the coming days.

The Orange parted ways with Adrian Autry after three seasons that produced no NCAA Tournament appearances, a 49-48 overall record, and back-to-back losing campaigns for the first time in decades. McNamara, currently the head coach at Siena, will return to his alma mater as a familiar face ready to lead Syracuse back to prominence.

A Syracuse legend as a player, McNamara helped deliver the 2003 national championship alongside freshman sensation Carmelo Anthony. Carmelo's son, Kiyan, is currently playing for Syracuse.

McNamara started all 135 games of his career, set program records for three-pointers made and minutes played, earned three All-Big East selections, and saw his No. 3 jersey retired in 2023. His clutch shooting and leadership defined an era that still resonates with fans inside the Carrier Dome.

McNamara’s coaching path began after a brief professional career overseas. He rejoined Syracuse in 2009 as a graduate assistant, rose to full-time assistant under Jim Boeheim in 2011, and served as associate head coach following Boeheim’s 2023 retirement. Over 15 years on the Orange bench, he helped develop talent and maintain the program’s identity through the transition to the ACC.

In 2024, McNamara took his first head-coaching job at Siena. He compiled a 37-30 record across two seasons, guided the Saints to the MAAC Tournament title this year, and earned an NCAA berth. As a 16-seed, Siena pushed top overall seed Duke to the brink in the first round, building a double-digit halftime lead before falling in a memorable performance that showcased McNamara’s tactical preparation and ability to maximize underdog rosters.
