Franjo von Allmen of Switzerland won the first gold medal of the Milan/Cortina Winter Olympics when he beat two skiers from hosts Italy for victory in the men's downhill race.
Von Allmen added Olympic gold to his world title from last year in the speed discipline, .20 of a second ahead of Italian shooting star Giovanni Franzoni.
The bronze under mostly sunny skies went to veteran Dominik Paris, a six-time downhill winner on the Stelvio piste, half a second off the pace.
Swiss great and pre-race contender Marco Odermatt had to settle for fourth, .20 off the podium in a race contested by only 36 skiers on the treacherous 3,442 Stelvio piste with a vertical drop of 1,023m which is among the most famous on the World Cup circuit.
