I hate the idea of signing old washed up receivers. Rarely does it work out.

Muhsin Muhammad at age 32 signing with the Bears from Carolina worked out pretty well.
Steve Smith moved to Baltimore from Carolina at 35 and remained productive.
Anquan Boldin had productive years with San Francisco after moving on from Baltimore at age 33.

OTOH, Andre Johnson moving from Houston to Indy at 34 didn't work out great, and Chad Johnson's (33) move to the Patriots wasn't great, either.

I think that the bigger danger is signing a complementary #2 from an explosive offense as a free agent and expecting him to be a #1 for your new team. THAT tends to work out bad.

You don't have to go back that far - lets look at the top guys supposedly on this list. Decker signing last year with the Titans didn't work out, Marshall with the Giants didn't work out, Maclin with the Ravens didn't work out. Floyd on Minnesota - supposed to be a homecoming - didn't do squat. Even Dez last year did not play well, couldn't consistently get open and had multiple drops, a few which turned into interceptions and he was an arrogant ass all while playing at a very sub-par level for his contract.

These are the guys we are talking about.

Maybe Inman could be an OK number 3 or 4 - but I think it is highly unlikely any of these guys make much impact, and I feel our cap space could be spent more wisely on other positions.

I dunno. I think that if Maclin came in here on a $3M deal and caught 40 balls for 440 yards and 3 TDs as a #2 WR and #3 or #4 target behind Fitz and David Johnson, we'd be happy. Same with Decker, who had 54 receptions for 563 yards last year.

Andre Ellington and Jermaine Gresham tied for #2 in receptions last season. We literally had trash as secondary receivers last year. Yes, those guys can't come in and be #1s, but we don't really need them to be. We just need them to be more consistent than J.J. Nelson.

Let's not discard the fact that Decker's QB was Marriota...and he completed more big passes to himself, than his WRs.

You mean the guy that led his team in catches and receptions sucks....yea okay
you didn't watch the tape or you need new glasses
if in your words "Dez was stuck to DB's like Velcro" How were the other WR's?...seeing Dez led the team in every statistical category that matters....Catches, Yards and TD's.
They must be the clevenland browns of wr's

Just because your stat book shows 'drops' means very little. Look at the passes 'dropped' they were Dez throwing at 100mph at the ground where Dez had to dive 23/24 times....and it was DEZ who got open when the orig route was done and Dak was extending the play and running around....yea DEZ got open not the other guys.

Dez can play....watch the tape...or we'll have to agree to disagree...

I'd love to see Fitz and Dez lined up with Christian Kirk ....BOOM!

And a really, really close watching of the tape, as you would attest, shows a w/o who caught just over 50% of Dak's throws, about 10 pts below Witten who has now retired to the booth.

How come nobody has snapped up this answer to wideout woes?

Do we have a deep threat on this team because I don't have a lot of faith in JJ "Stone Hands" Nelson.

One thing about JJ Nelson that has impressed me is that he always seems healthy/available. Hope I'm not jinxing him.

PS: anyone notice the fluff season articles haven't talked about WR at all? Butler and chad Williams not standing out at all I imagine otherwise they would be flooding us with articles about how they are going to the HOF.

Dave, really? Cmon man . . .
Really what?! I didn't see anything humorous or sarcastic about the post to which I responded. Now that two MORE weeks have gone by, I figured some people might have lost track of the timeline between when Butler was signed & when the prediction was made about a veteran WR signing. What am *I* missing?

Cardinals have intriguing competition for No. 2 WR spot

It’s hard to say right now who will be that number two,” Cardinals coach Steve Wilks said, via Darren Urban of the team website. “We’re still working, and those guys understand and know — we talk about it all the time — the best 11 are going to play. We create competition.”

Christian Kirk, a second-round pick this year, and Chad Williams, a third-round pick last year, figure to play into the competition along with Brice Butler, Cobi Hamilton and J.J. Nelson. Nelson had the second-most yards on the Cardinals behind Fitzgerald last season with 508, though he caught only 29 passes.

And the Cardinals still could sign a veteran to fit into the mix, via Urban.
