Former champions Llandovery issued a statement of intent to regain their title after beating holders Newport 27-20 on the opening night of the new season.

Newport led 15-5 in the first half thanks to tries by wing Fin Baker and lock Josh Skinner.

But Llandovery – back-to-back winners from 2022 to 20024 – hit back with 22 unanswered points to claim a bonus-point win at Newport Stadium despite ending the game with just 13 players.

Fly-half Ioan Hughes, prop Josh Morse and hooker Cameron Lewis all followed an earlier score from flanker Stuart Worrall who also provided several key turnovers as Newport blew a series of chances.

It was not until the final minute , with Adam Warren and Joe Powell both in the sin bin, that the Black and Ambers finally found a way through Barney Nightingale.

Four more games followed on Saturday, with Cardiff's 47-31 win at Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC) enough to see them become the early table toppers, just ahead of Ebbw Vale who beat Aberavon 36-17 at Eugene Cross Park, like Cardiff claiming two bonus points to add to their win.

Hosts Bridgend edged Carmarthen Quins 27-24, while Pontypool also enjoyed home advantage to beat Swansea 25-13.
