With the NBA Summer League set to tip off this week, Phoenix Suns rookie Koa Peat is eager to get to work with teammates Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea.
Peat was the 30th pick in the draft after averaging 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 35% from 3-point range last season at Arizona. He was a third-team All-Big 12 selection, helping the Wildcats to the Final Four for the first time since 2001.
The 6-foot-8 forward hit the court for the first time this week as the Suns prepare for their stint in Las Vegas, Nevada. With several other roster players set to also suit up in the desert, Peat has been impressed by his new teammates.
"It has been great," Peat said on Monday. "Khaman, obviously, a lob threat and defensive anchor. 'Sheer, 3-and-D, really affects the game in every way. Then Koby, just shooting the ball at the net. Playing with them is really fun and I'm just super excited to keep continuing to play with them."
Peat established himself as a first-round pick this year because of his scoring in the paint, with his ball-fakes, hesitation moves and jump shot. He also boasts great strength, enabling him to convert difficult finishes at the rim and draw contact.
Growing up just outside Phoenix, the 19-year-old played at Perry High School before committing to Arizona and head coach Tommy Lloyd. Peat is excited to join his hometown team and play in front of his family and friends, starting next season.
Peat is aiming to leave a strong first impression on the organization and his teammates in summer league. He set a few goals for himself, including a lofty one that should resonate.
"Just try to get better every day, 1% better every day," Peat said. "One goal for me is to try to lead the summer league in offensive rebounding and just try to be a menace on the glass."
