The high school basketball season got underway Dec. 1 with three girls games in the Shenandoah District.
Stuarts Draft beat Stonewall Jackson 77-26 in a nondistrict game. Draft got 29 points from junior Augusta Seibert, who had six 3-pointers, five in the first half. Sophomore Ella Ott finished with 13 points in the win. Aliyah Ogle led Stonewall with 11 points in the loss.
Draft opens district play Dec. 4 at home against Alleghany.
Waynesboro opened its season with a 45-34 win over Rocktown Dec. 1.
"I was very proud of our heart and hustle," said Waynesboro coach Skylar Napier.
Sophomore Shavea Torian led Waynesboro with 19 points while freshman Maliyah Bost had 11 in the win. Waynesboro is at home against Monticello in another nondistrict game Dec. 4.
The Wilson Memorial girls lost to Turner Ashby 50-33. Wilson hosts its invitational tournament Dec. 5 and 6. On Dec. 5 Lord Botetourt plays Liberty Christian at 6 p.m. followed by Wilson and Harrisonburg. The third-place game is at 6 p.m. the following night followed by the championship game at approximately 7:45 p.m.
