The Wake Forest Demon Deacons have found their new starting quarterback for the 2026 season in Gio Lopez. Lopez is a former UNC starting QB who transferred to the Tar Heels from South Alabama. The Wake Forest OC, Rob Ezell, was the OC for Lopez while at S. Alabama and the two have reunited in Winston-Salem, NC.
In this episode of Storm Cellar, we’re going to watched All-22 film of Lopez from his time at UNC under BillBelichick. The two games we’ll analyze are the season opener vs. TCU where Lopez was benched after completing only 4-of-10 passing for 69 yards with one INT and one fumble recovered. Lopez gave up two TD’s (INT, fumble) vs. the Horned Frogs defense.
Then his game against rival Duke where Lopez was 21-of-27 passing on 204 yards and two touchdowns (one rushing). A tale of two QB’s took place throughout the ‘25 season for the Tar Heels. Watch my breakdown of Lopez’s play here:
