Steve Maddalena began his week at the Golfweek Super Senior, Legend and Super Legend National Championship without a blemish on his card, and with that, the Michigan native took an early lead at the Golf Club of Georgia.
Maddalena, a Michigan Golf Hall of Famer, fired a 3-under 69 at the prestigious course in Alpharetta, Georgia, in Tuesday's first round. He went bogey-free, and that was the difference between Maddalena and his pursuers.
Not far behind, Stevie Cannady of Pooler, Georgia, is looking to add another victory in this event to his resume. Cannady, who opened with a 70 on Tuesday, won the tournament in 2024. It was his first national senior amateur title.
Cannady is tied for second with Steve Humphrey of Ocala, Florida. Only two other players, Thomas Cornelia and Jack Brown, finished the first day under par. Both men posted 1-under 71.
The Golf Club of Georgia proved to be a difficult test for a number of top players in the division. Notably, James Starnes and Greg Goode, the previous two players of the year in this division, are tied for 13th after rounds of 4-over 76. Allen Peake of Macon, Georgia, the winner of three Super Senior titles already this year, had 79 and is T-25.
In the Legend division, Bob Edens of Columbia, South Carolina, was one of only two players to break par. Edens, a sports psychologist, leads John Fritz of Mint Hill, North Carolina, by one shot after his 2-under 70.
Mark Benefield, runner-up in the Super Senior division of this event a year ago, and Emile Vaughan are tied for third at even par.
David Crocker of Bluffton, South Carolina, leads the Super Legend division with a 1-under 71. Defending champion Sam Robinson is part of a three-way tie for third at 2 over.
More low scores came in the limited-field Senior Division Invitational, where Todd Doss and Robert Sheats both had 3-under 69 to share the lead.
