What does the future hold for Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Anthony Richardson?

During Monday's media availability, head coach Shane Steichen was asked if he sees a role for Richardson with the Colts in 2026.

Steichen would end up discussing Richardson's eye injury that he's been working through.

“The biggest thing is the eye limitations," Steichen said. "That’s gotta get healthy, and those are conversations that will take place in the future.”

As The Athletic's James Boyd said, this was a non-answer. But in a way, however, this may tell us the actual answer to the question, which is that Richardson doesn't have much of a future with the Colts.

Once the Colts named Daniel Jones the starter over the summer, Richardson's path to reearning that role was never clear.

Now, after Riley Leonard's performance in Houston, the Colts may have more motivation to move on from Richardson, with Leonard looking like a more than capable backup quarterback option for them.

Richardson will enter the final year of his rookie deal in 2026. The Colts have to decide whether or not to pick up his fifth-year option for the 2027 season.

The plan for Indianapolis seems to revolve around bringing Jones back. Once that's completed, Richardson could become a potential trade candidate this offseason.

Colts' offseason QB path seems relatively clear:

*Re-sign Daniel Jones
*Develop Riley Leonard as a QB2
*Explore trade options for Anthony Richardson, who could follow blueprint of other top-five picks who thrived elsewhere.
