Yahya Black was one of the more surprising standouts from the 2025 NFL Draft class, as the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman quickly emerged as a dependable depth piece. But can he earn an even bigger role in 2026? We at Steelers Wire believe so.

From now until the start of the regular season, we at Steelers Wire will be analyzing every player on the roster. Here's a look at Black and what could be in store for his 2026 season.

At a glance

  • Height: 6-foot-5
  • Weight: 336 pounds
  • Age: 24 years old
  • NFL experience: 2

Career with the Steelers

Black, selected by Pittsburgh with the 164th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, was thrust into a big role early as a rookie, particularly due to injury woes on the defensive line. Black appeared in 17 games and made three starts while recording 28 combined tackles and two forced fumbles.

What's next in 2026?

After a rookie season at defensive end and defensive tackle, Black is expected to primarily play nose tackle in 2026. New defensive line coach Domata Peko couldn't help but sing Black's praises, even claiming the young Steeler could become "one of the best noses in the game." Black may not see as many starting opportunities behind nose tackle Keeanu Benton, but the second-year defensive lineman will offer Pittsburgh a massive body in run support.
