Cole Holcomb is a perfect example of what it means to be a Pittsburgh Steeler. Tough, selfless, and playing with a high motor, Holcomb has a big-time comeback opportunity heading into Year 8.
From now until the start of the regular season, we at Steelers Wire will be analyzing every player on the roster. Here's a look at Holcomb and what could be in store for his 2026 season.
Holcomb, who spent the first four seasons of his career with the Washington Commanders (2019-2022), signed with the Steelers on a three-year deal in March 2023. Despite emerging as a standout defender for Pittsburgh, Holcomb suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 9 of the 2023 regular season. He missed the entire 2024 season but returned in 2025, primarily as a special teamer and depth piece.
The Steelers signed Holcomb to a two-year extension in March 2026, and there's reason to believe he could return to his starting-caliber self.
To put it shortly: Holcomb is a tackling machine. Like most of the defense in 2025, the Steelers' linebackers struggled in a bad way. Whether it was run support or pass coverage, Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson were an extremely inconsistent part of the NFL's highest-paid defense. If either linebacker falters in DC Patrick Graham's new defense, expect Holcomb to have his number called sooner rather than later.
