Offensively, the Pittsburgh Steelers just haven't been successful since the end of the Killer B's era in 2018. But one well-respected insider believes one big change is coming to Pittsburgh's offense in 2026, courtesy of new head coach Mike McCarthy.
In the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's new Steelers chat, insider Ray Fittipaldo predicted one huge change for the new McCarthy-led offense: passing more frequently on first downs.
“Yes I think you could see that happen,” Fittipaldo wrote. “The past few seasons with Matt Canada and Arthur Smith as OCs you saw a lot of running on early downs and that led to a lot of third-and-longs if they weren’t running the ball well. If you get 5-7 yards on a first-down pass, it’s a lot easier to run on second and third downs”.
In 2025, the Steelers' offense was ranked 17th in points per game, 26th in yards per game, and 21st in yards per play. Although the team was toward the middle of the league in touchdowns scored, it just wasn't enough to get them a much-sought-after playoff win.
Pittsburgh's offense was infamously predictable over the past several years, but if Fittipaldo's assessment proves accurate, McCarthy could be looking to shake things up in the Steel City.
