With Pittsburgh Steelers S DeShon Elliott slated to miss several weeks with an MCL sprain, the acquisition of standout safety Jabrill Peppers couldn't have come at a better time — and clearly HC Mike Tomlin feels the same way.
On Tuesday, Tomlin shared what excites him most about Peppers — pointing to his ability to excel in a variety of roles on defense and special teams.
"We have Jabrill Peppers in the building," Tomlin told reporters. "We'll be signing Jabrill today and get him up to speed about what it is we'd ask him to do. Highly familiar with him, not only as his time as a Cleveland Brown, but scouted him heavily when he came out of Michigan. He's a football player first, positional player second.
"He displayed positional flexibility over the course of his career — at either safety position, at rundown, nickel. He's been a capable guy in the special teams space over the course of his career — covering kicks, returning punts. He's just a good, well-rounded football player. Glad to add and have him in the fold."
Tomlin loves his positional flexibility — and Peppers was one of the best safeties in 2024, as well as the seventh-highest graded per Pro Football Focus.
Whether or not Peppers will contribute right away remains to be seen, but fans should expect a healthy dose of special teams impact while he gets acclimated to the Steelers’ defensive scheme.
