To some — if not most — Mike Tomlin’s wise words can sometimes be hard to decipher. And when you have a big-name veteran QB like Aaron Rodgers potentially waiting in the wings, it’s important to set the record straight.
Tomlin, back at the owner's meeting a little while ago, stated that training camp was a line of demarcation for players on and off the roster — and many took it as a not-so-subtle hint at a deadline for Rodgers.
When asked to revisit his comments at a pre-draft press conference, Tomlin backtracked from his original stance and said he didn’t mean Rodgers specifically:
"To be quite honest with you, I don't know that I meant that specifically for [Aaron Rodgers] or the circumstance. I'm just saying in general, when you report to training camp, it's a line of demarcation for development of a group — individually and collectively."
Tomlin was then asked whether he’d be okay with Rodgers missing OTAs and then signing with the Steelers — a notion the head coach paid little attention to:
"I hadn’t pondered those things to be quite honest with you."
If Rodgers is truly destined to sign with the Steelers — a scenario that no longer seems as certain — will he skip training camp while tending to the personal matters he previously alluded to?
