Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was very complimentary of polarizing draft prospect and quarterback Shedeur Sanders prior to the 2025 NFL Draft. But that isn't the signal caller the Steelers drafted.

In the sixth round of the 2025 draft, Tomlin and the Steelers picked Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard.

During his first post-NFL draft press conference Saturday night, Tomlin shared with reporters what he likes about Howard.

"I think like a lot of people, how he responded to that adversity at the end of their regular season and the leadership and playmaking that he displayed throughout the playoffs was really attractive," Tomlin said. "And it's really what NFL football is about. There's going to be some adversity.

"How you respond to it defines you and your football team, particularly from the quarterback position."

The Steelers drafted Howard at No. 185 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Right after the selection, the national champion signal-caller shared a video where he expressed his excitement about joining the Steelers.

“What’s up, Steelers Nation. Just jumped in the pool with my family to celebrate,” Howard said. “Can’t wait to be apart of this. Can’t wait to get to Pittsburgh and get started. Let’s go.”

Howard was the first quarterback the Steelers selected in the NFL draft since Kenny Pickett's class. In 2022, Tomlin's team picked Pickett in the first round and South Dakota State Jackrabbits signal-caller Chris Oladokun in the seventh round.

Neither quarterback was still on Pittsburgh's roster last year.

Howard spent only one season at Ohio State, but he led the Buckeyes to a 14-2 record and four playoff wins.

The Steelers haven't won a playoff game since January 2017.
