With less than four weeks to the start of the 2026 NFL draft, time is running out for the Pittsburgh Steelers to sort out their quarterback situation. It doesn't feel like Aaron Rodgers is going to give the team any clarity on his NFL future before the draft and while we expect him to eventually grace the team with his presence, it shouldn't impact the draft, if the Steelers covet a particular quarterback for their future.

One prospect who we've seen linked to Steelers since the hiring of new head coach Mike McCarthy is LSU's Garrett Nussmeier. McCarthy was at the LSU pro day in person and kept a close eye on Nussmeier's workout. Nussmeier's dad, Doug, was the quarterbacks coach with the Dallas Cowboys from 2020 to 2022 when McCarthy was the head coach, so McCarthy is very familiar with the young quarterback's skills and pedigree.

Nussmeier returned to school in 2025 despite being one of the top quarterbacks in that year's draft class and did himself no favors. After for throwing for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2024, Nussmeier threw for only 1,927 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2025. If the Steelers roll the dice on Nussmeier, they are banking on his ability to regain his form from two seasons ago. If there's any coach who knows what Nussmeier can do and can bring out the best in him, it might be McCarthy.
