Is there actually a possibility that the Pittsburgh Steelers could either bench or move on from Aaron Rodgers if he had a bad season?
Personally, I can't ever see that happening unless there was an injury that kept Rodgers out for the remainder of the season, or he played so poorly that the Steelers believe it would be better to move on from him before he decides to retire at the end of the season.
Even in that event, I can't imagine Pittsburgh and Mike McCarthy would move on from a guy that both parties seemingly have a ton of respect for.
Now, I will never say that anything is impossible in the NFL, and unfortunately, I think Rodgers and the Steelers have found that out the hard way over the past decade or so.
There have been points where Rodgers has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and that's fair, but the last four years haven't been kind to him. The Steelers have been a very good team, but there have also been moments when they haven't done what was needed and lost games in the playoffs despite previous success.
However, one reporter recently suggested that Rodgers could be moved on.
That doesn't mean it's going to happen, but if he has an ugly first month and the Steelers believe they have a chance with better quarterback play, it shouldn't be counted out.
“I would say he'd get like a month. But it would also need to be that he falls so far off a cliff that it would be disastrous for a month. Rodgers is one of the smarter QBs I've ever watched and even if his arm falls off -- I can tell you from what I saw over the past month it has not -- I think he could work his way around physical issues and still make plays.
“If he bombs the first month, then they'd maybe look at changes,” Christopher Carter wrote.
As Carter wrote here, the fortunate part for Rodgers is that even though he's declining physically, which is to be expected for a guy who's over 40 years old and still playing, his ability to understand defenses, make the right pass, and other IQ factors are always going to be in his favor.
He's one of the smartest quarterbacks of all time, and should find himself with a job because of that.
