While the Pittsburgh Steelers boast one of the more classic and likable uniforms in the NFL, they've also been accused of having some of the worst throwbacks.
That, of course, is because of their longevity in the league. Most teams that were around in the 30s and 40s had pretty terrible uniforms by today's standards.
Previously, Pittsburgh had broken out what was described as the "bumblebee jerseys" that honored their 1934 team. They've also worn all gold helmets, reflecting on their original look from 1933 through 1962.
The Steelers' uniforms and familiar black and gold colors, as well as the traditional helmet with the logo on just one side, are synonymous with success and the team that the Rooney family has built over those 91 years.
Earlier this month, FanDuel reported that Pittsburgh could be one of five teams to break out new helmets in 2025.
"The Steelers appear to be on the verge of reviving their gold helmets, which they wore from their founding in 1933 through the 1962 season, as well as for throwback games from 2007-10," FanDuel wrote. "They’d presumably wear them with their Color Rush uniforms, which, aside from the black pants, are similar to the aforementioned throwback set, which featured white britches."
On Wednesday, we got a little more clarification from Steelers president Art Rooney.
“We are going to have a new throwback uniform this year, and with a new helmet to go with it,” said Rooney. “We’re planning to wear our new throwbacks for the Packers game on Sunday night, Oct. 26.
“It’ll be fun to wear our throwbacks against one of the older franchises in the league – that just seems to be appropriate.”
Speculation is that the gold helmet will return with a new-look Color Rush uniform. Rooney said that's not the only game they'll break out the new look.
“We’ll be doing our color rush uniforms late in the year. I think we’re going to do it for the Monday night game on Dec. 15 against the Miami Dolphins,” said Rooney.
