With his inclusion on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 17 inactive list, a once-heralded steal of the 2025 NFL Draft has found himself as a healthy scratch for the second straight game.
After missing the Week 16 win over the Detroit Lions as a healthy scratch, rookie running back Kaleb Johnson once again found himself on the Steelers’ inactive list, where he’ll join six other game-day inactives: quarterback Will Howard (emergency third QB), cornerback James Pierre (calf), cornerback Brandin Echols (groin), wide receiver Calvin Austin III (hamstring), offensive guard Isaac Seumalo (triceps), and outside linebacker T.J. Watt (lung).
Drafted with the 83rd overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Johnson has struggled to live up to the hype behind his selection — getting benched earlier in the season for one of the worst kickoff mistakes any player could make, while also recording just 69 rushing yards on 28 attempts, an abysmal 2.5 yards per carry.
It’s worth remembering that Johnson is just a rookie and could still play a bigger role as he adapts to the speed of the NFL, potentially forming a three-headed running back monster with Kenneth Gainwell and Jaylen Warren for years to come.
