The German government opposes a boycott of this year's football World Cup, State Minister for Sport Christiane Schenderlein has said.

"A boycott is out of the question for us," Schenderlein told daily Süddeutsche Zeitung in an interview published late Tuesday.

"We have agreed on this within the government, and when it comes to a boycott we say: We are not supporting this. The relationship with the United States is shaped in a foreign policy way. That is a different level.

"Sport must not be misused for this. You must first and foremost look at the competition.

"Furthermore, the upcoming World Cup is not only taking place in the USA but also in Canada and Mexico.

Schenderlein said the government was aware of the debate, with some boycott considerations coming because of the idea of US President Donald Trump to take over Greenland and the military operation in Venezuela in early January.

German Football Federation (DFB) vice-president and St Pauli club president Oke Göttlich said recently there should at least be a boycott debate.

But Schenderlein said: "The decision is in the hands of the DFB and (world governing body) FIFA because we respect the autonomy of sport.

"At the end of the sport must decide how to deal with such a situation and not policy."
