PEORIA — Layne Langholf is taking some time away from coaching.

The longtime girls basketball coach told the Journal Star on Tuesday afternoon that he has resigned from Peoria Notre Dame after eight seasons. He remains a physical education teacher for Peoria Public Schools.

Langholf said he's going to be spending more of his time with his wife, Maureen, and family while they support their son, Dylan, who is battling a recurrence of rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer found in soft tissues like muscle, blood vessels or tendons. The Journal Star chronicled Dylan's journey in a story from January 2024.

"It's been a rough couple of years for all of us," Layne said. "... I need to be home and help Dylan get through this next battle. That needs to be where my focus is ... my family right now."

Langholf spent the last eight seasons at PND, guiding them to back-to-back Illinois High School Association Class 2A state championship games.

The Irish won the 2024 state title, then finished as state runner-up in March 2025, capping a two-year run that ended with a 67-9 record. He went 169-71 (.704) in his tenure at PND, following a 13-year stint at Canton where he was 204-160 (.560).

Mya Wardle (2024) and Julia Mingus (2025) were named Journal Star girls basketball players of the year under Langholf. He also coached several NCAA Division-I college basketball players including Wardle (Bradley) and Kaitlyn Cassidy (Southern Illinois-Edwardsville).

The upcoming 2025-26 team features Lexi Baer, who has committed to Butler, and D-I prospect Emy Wardle, who has scholarship offers from Bradley, DePaul, Eastern Kentucky, Southern Indiana, Lindenwood and Northern Illinois.

Irish assistant Mike Breitbach is expected to take over head coaching duties with practice starting on Nov. 3.
