Stars send Mavrik Bourque packing just weeks after he publicly declared his love for Dallas originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Dallas Stars traded forward Mavrik Bourque and defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin to the Nashville Predators on Wednesday. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported the deal one hour before free agency opened. Dallas received a 2027 second-round draft pick and a 2028 third-round draft pick in exchange.
But the trade is absolutely shocking since it follows comments Bourque made in May to Lia Assimakopoulos of The Dallas Morning News. Bourque stated he saw his future in Dallas, saying, "I don't see myself anywhere else than being a Dallas Star." He credited the organization for his development since they selected him 30th overall in the 2020 draft.
Loyalty, however, could not override the harsh realities of the NHL salary cap. Bourque was a restricted free agent (RFA) coming off a breakout year, posting career highs of 20 goals, 21 assists, and 41 points in 82 games. That performance put him in prime territory to receive a high-value "offer sheet" from a rival club.
Under NHL rules, if a rival team signed Bourque to an offer sheet, Dallas would have been forced to match the expensive contract or lose him for minimal draft-pick compensation. Rather than risk losing him for nothing or clogging up their financial books, Stars General Manager Jim Nill chose to move him proactively.
"Unfortunately, he's a casualty of the cap world," Nill admitted following the trade, noting that Bourque's upcoming contract demands simply would not fit into the team's structure.
And to make the money work, veteran defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin was added to the deal. Moving Lyubushkin sheds his $3.25 million cap hit from Dallas's books in the final year of his contract. The 32-year-old blueliner recorded nine points in 53 games for the Stars last season.
Dallas did all this for one clear reason: to find enough money to re-sign their best player, Jason Robertson. Robertson led the team with 96 points last season.
Right now, he is sitting out as an unsigned restricted free agent. He even turned down a massive eight-year, $120 million offer to be traded to Seattle. Clearing out Lyubushkin’s contract proves that fixing this mess with Robertson is the team's number one goal.
The pressure got worse this week after another big trade fell through. Dallas tried to work out a deal with Columbus for defenseman Zach Werenski, which would have involved moving Thomas Harley. When that trade collapsed, Dallas got trapped against the salary cap.
Losing a talented 24-year-old like Bourque hurts, but for Dallas, it is the price they have to pay to keep their biggest star.
