The Philadelphia 76ers have been trying to capitalize on the window that the team has to win a championship as long as Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey are in town. Along the way, Philadelphia has made some questionable moves when it comes to building the roster and one of their former players explains how his career has changed since the 76ers let him go.

"Back then, being 22, I think I was. I thought it was over, I ain't gonna lie to you. I was always told how small the window is to kind of put your foot and get your foot in the league and stay there and make a career for yourself," San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said during his postgame press conference on Saturday. Champagnie put up 20 points and six rebounds in Saturday's Game 7 111-103 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder to get to the NBA Finals.

"Getting opportunity only in the G League, and then getting waived with no warning, no nothing, [no] explanation or anything, it was tough," Champagnie continued. "It was tough for a 20-year-old kid who was just thinking I was gonna chase my dreams and telling myself you could do this. Obviously, I had no clue where I was gonna end up. My agent told me it could be anywhere. It ended up being in San Antonio."

On Feb. 14, 2023, NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the 76ers were not only waiving Champagnie, but that they were waiving him to sign guard Mac McClung. Champagnie, whom Philadelphia signed to a Two-Way contract on Jul. 2, 2022, played in just two regular-season games for the 76ers during the 2022-23 season before he was waived to create space for McClung.

While McClung is arguably one of the best players to grace the G League given that he's won two Most Valuable Player awards, his NBA career has been underwhelming in comparison to say the least. Philadelphia was doing what it thought was the right decision at the time and while the decision didn't work out for them, Champagnie was able to continue living his dream and has a chance to win a title this year.
