ELLINGTON – Camryn Fisher was so locked into pitching Thursday, she lost track of what inning it was in Ellington’s game against Coventry.
She needed one more strikeout to reach 1,000 for her career. Fisher, Ellington’s senior pitcher, thought it was the top of the seventh. There were two outs.
“I had so much going through my head, I didn’t know what was going on,” Fisher said. “I was just throwing.”
It was actually the top of the sixth inning but it didn’t matter – with two strikes, Lilah Talega fouled off a bunt for strike three and the Ellington coaches and players mobbed the mound to congratulate Fisher.
“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, if I don’t get it right now it’s the end,’” Fisher said. “But we had another inning after.”
Fisher got three more strikeouts in the seventh; she needed 14 to reach the milestone and ended up with 17 in Ellington’s 9-1 victory over Coventry, the two-time Class S state champion.
“I was excited,” she said. “All the hard work paid off and I had my team behind me to keep me going.”
Fisher, who will play at Appalachian State next season, reached the milestone a little earlier than expected after having 37 strikeouts in a 14-inning win over Hale-Ray April 19. She has thrown two perfect games and a no-hitter this season for Ellington (9-2), last year’s Class L runner-up.
“She got her 500th (strikeout) last season – the first game of last season – basically, she’s been so impressive since then,” Ellington coach Tom Gordon said. “In ninth grade, she missed probably 7-8 games, she had an injury. To reach this milestone that fast is really impressive.
“She’ll get a few more this year, I think.”
Fisher struck out the side in the first inning and had three strikeouts in the second, although she gave up a walk. She struck out the side again in the fourth and had two in the fifth inning and two in the sixth before giving up a double to Coventry senior Brooke Blouin in the seventh (but still recording three strikeouts).
Fisher was fired up after Ellington’s 2-1 loss to Tolland Wednesday. She gave up too many walks, she said, although she struck out 17 in that game as well.
“Throughout the game yesterday, it was kind of difficult – I’m constantly in a slump and trying to fix my mechanics and nothing’s working,” she said. “I reflected on it at night, then I woke up and I was hyped for this game. I just didn’t want it to happen again.”
Ty Gambacorta hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and had two hits and Mickyla Wong and Alyssa Corsino also had two hits, two RBI and scored two runs for the Knights.
“We talked about it today,” Gordon said of the Tolland game. “When you have a bad game and strike out 17 and give up two unearned runs, that’s not the worst thing in the world. I was happy with the way we played today.”
