LIBERTY — The Southwestern Warriors were right with West Jessamine late in their regional first round contest on Monday, that was until the Colts managed to score six runs over the last three innings to take an 11-5 victory to bring the Warriors’ season to an end.
The Warriors fell behind early 3-0 but got a run back in the bottom of the third courtesy of an RBI single from Michael Miller. Southwestern fell even further behind after the top of the fourth however, as they saw their deficit increase to four runs.
After two early walks in the bottom of the fourth, an error would score the second Southwestern run of the game. Another walk loaded the bases up, before a two-RBI single from Tayden Richardson, along with an RBI single from Jackson Couch, tied things up at 5-5.
However, the Colts went ahead for good in the top of the fifth following an RBI single from senior Blake Buehner. Add in two runners scoring after a batter was hit by a pitch, and the Colts suddenly had full control of the contest and were ahead 8-5.
The offense for Southwestern suddenly went cold over the next two innings, while West Jessamine kept on scoring. The Warriors were down to their final three outs and trailed by six runs. Unfortunately, the Warrior offense could not find solid contact on the ball late, as they were sat down in order to hand the Colts a 11-5 victory over Southwestern, bringing a solid season for the Warriors to a close.
Richardson led the way with two RBI’s, while Couch, Miller and Reno Scott all had one RBI apiece. Couch also added a stolen base in the contest. Richardson went four innings in his start, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with one strikeout. Miller earned the loss in relief, going two innings while allowing four runs on three hits with two walks. Scott pitched an inning in relief, allowing two runs on one hit with three walks and one strikeout.
Southwestern finishes their season with a record of 21-18. Best of luck to seniors Jonah Brock, Jackson Couch, Griffin Epperson, Kyson Harris, Clifton Sawyers, Caleb Shipp, Ben Stewart and Jayden Taylor on all of their future endeavors.
