- South Korea's head coach Hong Myung-bo resigned on Sunday, June 28 after the team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup
- President Lee Jae-myung said after the loss that Myung-bo was "incapable" of leading the team
- "I could not bring the result that our people had expected. All responsibilities are with me," Myung-bo said in a press conference
South Korea's head coach Hong Myung-bo has resigned after the country's president said he was "incapable" following their early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After South Korea's elimination, following losses to Mexico and South Africa, President Lee Jae-myung said, “As a former honorary professional football club chairman and, at heart, a member of the Red Devils, I feel not just surprise but deep bewilderment at this unexpected result,” according to The Associated Press.
The President reportedly added, "Once again, it has been proven that personnel decisions determine everything. If loyalty and factionalism are valued over competence and an incapable person is appointed as a leader, the outcome is as predictable as fire."

On Sunday, June 28, before the team left their Mexico base camp where they practiced during the tournament, Myung-bo, 57, announced his resignation and apologized to the team's fans.
"To all of the Korean people who love and support our national team, I would like to genuinely apologise. Today, I'd like to announce that I will step down as the national team head coach," Myung-bo said in a press conference, per FIFA.com.
"It was not an easy decision for me to take this role, but once I took it, I thought about nothing else except being responsible until the very last moment. I believed that was the only way for me to work."
He continued, “As the head coach, no explanation can supersede the ultimate result. I could not bring the result that our people had expected. All responsibilities are with me. Today, I step down as the national team head coach. However, my heart for Korean football will remain the same. I will now support Korea national team to regain the trust and love of our people.”

Myung-bo also coached the team in the 2014 World Cup, where they were also eliminated in the group stage.
South Korea won its first match against the Czech Republic team before going on to lose to Mexico and South Africa. Myung-bo's squad had a chance to qualify for the Round of 32 but was knocked out when Uzbekistan lost to the Republic of Congo on Saturday, June 27.
