The South Carolina Gamecocks are making a major change for the baseball program.
After less than two years at the helm, head coach Paul Mainieri is being let go by the Gamecocks, per multiple reports. Mainieri, a former College World Series-winning coach with the LSU Tigers, came out of retirement to take over at South Carolina in 2025, but is being let go after going 28-29 in his first season, and then starting out 12-11 this season.
On Friday, South Carolina was blown out by Arkansas, 22-6, which seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back.
"Jeremiah Donati and I have agreed that the baseball program will be better served with new leadership," Mainieri said in a statement, according to The State Newspaper's Jordan Kaye. "I take full responsibility for the win/loss record of the baseball program over the 80 games I have served as head coach."
Mainieri came to South Carolina and took over for Mark Kingston, who coached the Gamecocks for seven seasons, going 217-155.
Before his time at South Carolina, Mainieri coached for 14 years at LSU, going 641-283-3 and making five trips to the College World Series. Mainieri and the Tigers won the national championship in 2009.
