Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham’s pre-game photo with former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines led to mixed reactions on the internet.
Cunningham has become a major voice in the debate to keep trans athletes out of gendered sports, with Sophie expressing her support for keeping women’s sports closed to biological women.
As the movement around Cunningham’s comments continues to elicit polarizing reactions, the 29-year-old WNBA star posed with the controversial Riley Gaines before her game against the Lynx.

Cunningham took a pre-game picture with Gaines and former Levi’s executive Jennifer Sey, with Cunningham holding up a sign given to her which read, ‘Thank you for speaking up. – A Girl Mom.’
With how this topic has led to strong reactions from people all across the political spectrum, fans on social media were also split after seeing this picture.
“All that just to score 3 points,” said one fan after Cunningham’s disappointing performance on the night.
“Riley Gaines is so damn annoying. I agree with Sophie’s stance here, but this is grifting and stupid,” said one Cunningham fan who didn’t appreciate linking up with Gaines.
“Hey, look, someone who averages 9 ppg, and someone who finished 5th are scared of imaginary issues,” said another to mock Gaines and Cunningham’s performance in their sports.

“Sophie’s trade value is absolutely TANKING by the day. Hope she likes Indiana, nobody else wants her,” said one angry fan.
“Riley is right-wing because she wants to keep men out of women’s sports? She’s in the majority here, and it isn’t even close!” said one fan in support of Gaines and Cunningham.
“Right-wing” is doing some heavy lifting there. Thinking women shouldn’t have to compete against men isn’t an especially political ideology,” said another fan in support.
Cunningham is averaging 9.3 points and 2.3 rebounds this season.
Cunningham’s Fever lost 108-100 to the Lynx on the night, with her teammates and organization repeatedly stressing that everyone needs to focus on basketball to help the franchise win a title.
The Fever are 19-11 this season, with the loss to the Lynx dropping them to being tied for fifth-best in the standings.
