The Boston Red Sox acquired Kyle Harrison in the trade that sent Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, but now Harrison is thriving for the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Red Sox sent Harrison to the Brewers in the trade that landed them Caleb Durbin. Harrison had a 3.00 ERA in three games, two of which were starts, for the Red Sox, and a 3.75 ERA in 12 starts with Triple-A Worcester. For the Brewers, he has a 2.28 ERA through five starts, and he recorded 12 strikeouts and six shutout innings in his last start.

Harrison looks like a different pitcher with the Brewers. One of the changes the Brewers made was moving him to the first base side of the rubber, but Harrison actually credited something the Red Sox had him do for his newfound success. When Harrison got to the Red Sox, they said they wanted to improve his changeup and wanted to create something like Connelly Early's kick change for him.

“And then I started just messing with that grip, and it took forever to harness, man. It took all the way up through this offseason, trying to get a feel for it.”

Harrison kept working on the grip and was comfortable by spring training. However, before he could show it off for the Red Sox, he was shipped to Milwaukee. Now his changeup usage is up, and it is getting above-average vertical drop.

“It was kind of cool to have that time with the Red Sox, because I was able to experiment, see what works, try certain pitches I never would have tried,” he said. “And then I got this changeup out of it, so we’ll take it, you know?”

Had the Red Sox not made Harrison work on his changeup, he may not have been able to pitch the way he has for the Brewers early in the season. Meanwhile, Connelly Early is having a great start of his own for the Red Sox. However, seeing how Harrison has played in Milwaukee may have the Red Sox regretting moving him.
