The Somerville High School softball team has come storming out of the gate and taken control of the Skyland Conference Mountain Division race, getting out to a 7-0 start before Thursday’s setback to Voorhees.

And while the Pioneers have gotten plenty of contributions with an offense averaging nearly seven runs per game, the pitching of the junior right-hander and three-year letterwinner has been front and center.

Graber took over as the Ville’s ace after the graduation of Nicole Fitzgibbon, and while she saw some time in the circle last year as the No. 2 pitcher, her start to this year has been exactly what the Pioneers have needed. She has already posted four shutouts and had allowed just one earned run in 33 innings (0.21 ERA) during the first two weeks of the season. She permitted just 14 hits and eight walks, striking out 62, including at least 10 in each of her five outings.

She also helped out at the plate, going 5-for-17 with two doubles, a homer, two walks and six RBIs.

“Sarah Graber has been central to our start this season at Somerville,” coach Karissa Astrella said. “She loves to compete, she has a great passion for softball, and she genuinely loves to work hard. Her mentality (in the circle) is phenomenal as she never gets rattled and just continues to aggressively move through lineups. I can’t wait to see what Sarah and the Ville keep doing this season and beyond.”
