May 2—DELPHOS — With only two seniors on this year's roster, Delphos Jefferson softball coach Doug Geary has relied on contributions from many of his underclassmen.

In Tuesday's non-conference matchup against visiting Ada, several of Delphos Jefferson's young athletes played key roles in a 4-1 victory.

Delphos Jefferson pounded eight base hits off Ada's ace pitcher Jenna Bassitt, while Delphos Jefferson sophomore pitcher Claire Brinkman pitched a complete game.

For many years, Ada competed in the Northwest Conference with Delphos Jefferson but Ada now plays in the Blanchard Valley Conference.

"That's the team (Ada) we've competed against for the past couple of years," Geary said. "I think we've been close (to defeating them). Today, we put it together. We had some timely hitting early on. Our pitcher did a fantastic job, and defensively we made some plays."

Brinkman pitched all seven innings for Delphos Jefferson. She struck out two and walked one, while throwing 77 pitches.

"She (Brinkman) limited the walks today and got ahead in the count," Geary said. "Defensively, we made plays. We made the routine play, and we made a couple pretty tough plays. And it wasn't great conditions with the wind today.

"We always worry that we use her (Brinkman) too much, but she's not overthrowing like some pitchers. She's trying to hit some spots. She pitched a great game today."

Bassitt also went the distance in the circle. She struck out five and walked two, while tossing 93 pitches.

Delphos Jefferson jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the end of the second inning. The Wildcats scored those four runs on seven hits.

"We hit the ball hard. The wind might've helped a little bit, for sure. We put the ball in play and made them make some plays. We proved that we could hit a little bit," Geary said.
