Apr. 9—GLENWOOD — With eight starters back, the Minnewaska softball team hopes to keep its momentum trending upward.

The Lakers went 7-16 last season, a five-game improvement from 2023. Minnewaska also went 4-10 in the West Central Conference.

"We have a lot of young talent returning to our roster this year," said second-year head coach Luke Barkeim. He's joined on staff with assistants Jesse Johnson and Jaclyn Skoglund.

Barkeim continued, "We are excited for the opportunity to compete in the conference and make a run in the section with eight returning starters, including two seniors."

Those seniors are pitcher/third baseman Mataya Mix and first baseman Lauren Stryhn.

The Lakers have three juniors back. They are shortstop/pitcher Ella Roering, catcher/outfielder Emma Poegel and first baseman/designated hitter Carly Jergenson. Mahry Wiegman is another junior on the roster.

Minnewaska also returns three sophomores with outfielder Haillie Schulz, third baseman Eliana Marthaler and outfielder/shortstop Avery Lewison. Ella Aaberg and Kylie Fenger are also sophomores looking for playing time.

The team will get tested early.

The Lakers hope to open the season at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 8 at home against the Morris/Chokio-Alberta Tigers. It's followed by a non-conference game with Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, also at Minnewaska. And then, the Lakers conclude the week with yet another home game at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 11 against Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.
