The Logansport softball team is hosting the first ever Kinnaman Classic today.

The event is named after Ron Kinnaman, who was the first coach of the program, which started in 1988.

Kinnaman coached the Berries for 18 seasons from 1988-2005. He went 346-119 and won six sectional titles. He went 96-23 in NCC games and won eight league titles.

The program started off hot, going 25-2 and finishing one game short of the State Finals in the Harrison Regional in 1988.

Kinnaman also finished strong, going 23-5 and winning a second straight NCC title in 2005.

The Berries’ Class 4A sectional title last year was their first since Kinnaman’s Berries won a Class 3A title in 1998, when softball was a three-class sport in the first year of multi-class softball.

“I wanted to do something to recognize Ron,” Logansport coach Cory Cripe said. “We decided that we wanted to host a little tournament here. We have an opportunity with two fields to have a little six-teamer.”

The softball field right next to Fincher Field nearer to the Berry Patch is ready for game action. It has a grass field while Fincher Field has field turf.

Rainfall Saturday has caused changes to the schedule. There will be three games at Fincher Field only. Logan (6-0) plays Lowell (2-2) at noon, followed by Lowell versus Fishers (6-3) at 1:30 p.m. Logan plays Fishers at 3.

Maconaquah, Rochester and Northridge were scheduled to play at the event but their games have been canceled.

The Berries are off to a 6-0 start despite sophomore Brooklynn Hagerty not even having pitched yet this season. She pitched the Berries to a Class 4A sectional title a year ago but is out with an early season injury. The trio of senior Natalee Packard and freshmen Gracie Risley and Mady Baumgardner have combined for a 0.24 ERA.

The offense, meanwhile, has averaged 7.7 runs per game.

The Berries recorded a 5-0 win at Lafayette Jeff on Thursday night.

Risley took a perfect game into the seventh inning before allowing a single to center by Kenzie Hutchison to lead off the seventh. But Risley recorded two strikeouts and a fly out to end the game. She finished with a one-hit shutout and 10 strikeouts.

She helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. Adrienne Scott had a single, two RBIs and a run scored. Kate Spradling, Bella Nicoles and Packard each added a hit. Teagan Wolf was credited for her outstanding defensive efforts in left field one night after hitting an inside-the-park home run in a 14-1 win against Tipton.

Coach Cripe is looking forward to competing with this group and at the same time honoring Kinnaman today.

“He’s doing great,” Cripe said. “He’s a little embarrassed about having a tournament named after him, but he’s great. He’s doing well. I talk to him about once every month or so.

“He’s the first coach in program history and kind of mentored me my first couple years.”
