When Hubert Davis took over for Roy Williams as head coach of the UNC men's basketball program, the future looked bright.

Davis' head coaching career started the way every coach dreams of: with a National Championship appearance. Outside of a Sweet 16 appearance two seasons later, North Carolina never played up to its historic standard.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Tar Heels made an extremely tough decision to fire Davis as head coach. This comes after UNC blew a 19-point, second half lead to VCU in both team's NCAA Tournament opener.

Davis led UNC to five straight 20-win seasons – and fielded some extremely talented rosters. RJ Davis and Armando Bacot anchored the 2022 National Championship game appearance, Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan led a top-seeded North Carolina squad two seasons later, while Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar highlighted the 2025-26 roster.

The Tar Heels strung together a couple big wins against quality opponents under Davis, but largely struggled. Just look at UNC's Quad 1 record during its 2024-25 campaign, which ended with a debatable NCAA Tournament entry.

Davis won 125 games at North Carolina – across just five seasons. Most programs salivate for this type of production, even that school in red from Raleigh.

After that magical 2021-222 campaign, though, the Tar Heels never played at a National Championship level. A historic program like UNC needs to be competing for titles, which is why hiring a coach outside the Carolina Family makes the most sense.

There will be a weird veil over Chapel Hill the next couple days, but Tar Heel Nation will quickly look to the future. Here's how social media reacted to Davis' firing on Tuesday night:

Hubert Davis is a good person.

Never forget this Hubert Davis moment from 2022.

Sure, we need a better coach, but couldn’t have asked for a better man.

Thanks for everything, Hubert. #GoHeelspic.twitter.com/p7j7PRxR4k

When I think of Hubert Davis, I'll think of videos like this one.

Here's Hubert embracing his son after coaching against him in a JV game in 2018...

He loved UNC and loved his family. He did a great job representing the University of North Carolinapic.twitter.com/DMA1wZjcvm

Hubert Davis,
Thank you. I have been hard on you but you gave this program some of its greatest moments. It’s a hard job with a lot of pressure. The most important thing a college coach can do is be a good influence on their players and make them better people, and you did that.

UNC won games under Hubert Davis, but underperformed

The 2022 season cemented Hubert Davis’ positive legacy as head coach.

However, hard to overcome these numbers:

125-54 overall, 28th in D1

19-24 vs AP Top 25

28-47 vs Quad 1

2 Rd of 64 losses

1 missed tournament

Ended season on 3-game losing streak, first time since 1970

Did Caleb Wilson's injury start Hubert Davis' downfall?

North Carolina was 24-6 on March 5th and getting ready to get Caleb Wilson back that weekend against Duke.

Wilson suffered a season-ending injury that afternoon in practice.

The Tar Heels never won a game the rest of the year.

19 days later, Hubert Davis lost his job.

Hubert Davis always had good quotes.

Hubert Davis firing very similar to Mack Brown's

This is important to note. #UNC gave Hubert Davis the chance to step down, he did not and was ultimately fired. https://t.co/udYGPjP06I

Just to be clear, Davis was given a chance to resign and chose not to, so he was fired. We will have more on this on our board later tonight.

Was fundraising a reason for Hubert Davis' firing?

There are a lot of reasons Hubert Davis was fired tonight.

The biggest reason isn’t basketball, though.

It’s fundraising. Both for a competitive roster budget next season and for a new arena.

The best available job in college basketball.

North Carolina is the best job in all of college basketball. The next hire has to reflect that.

A lasting impact on UNC basketball

In all honesty, this hurts. Hubert Davis poured his heart and soul into UNC basketball. A program he loved dearly. Sad to see it end this way. Thank you, Coach Davis. You've earned your rightful place in Tar Heel history. #GoHeelspic.twitter.com/Jg8VtcOKWB

Writing was on the wall long before the VCU loss.

Reminder: contrary to what some people on TV might tell you, this whole Hubert Davis situation isn’t over losing one game to VCU.

And if you see someone spewing that nonsense on TV or the interwebs, turn them off immediately. Clueless.

— Jacob Turner (@JacobTurnerNC) March 24, 2026

Wouldn't have guessed this ending with previous highs.

If you had told me in October that UNC would:

- Beat Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky in the same season

- Have a top 5 pick on the roster

Without knowing anything else that happened in the season, I wouldn’t have thought we’d be here today
