The UNC baseball team can now officially begin making its NCAA Tournament preparations. On Monday afternoon, North Carolina (45-11-1, 22-8 ACC) learned it'll play as the fifth overall seed and host its own Regional.
First up for the Diamond Heels, a 5 p.m. Friday date with the VCU Rams. VCU (41-23, 24-10 A-10) enters Chapel Hill on a 3-game winning streak, beating top overall seed St. Joe's once and 5-seed Rhode Island twice.
UNC has an extremely tough regional field in addition to the Rams, welcoming in-state rival East Carolina and 2024 College World Series champion Tennessee. Regional hosts typically are a site's best team, but that answer is up for discussion between four traditional baseball powers.
North Carolina is known primarily for its shutdown pitching, but offense paved its way to the ACC Championship game, thanks to 29 runs in three games. Georgia Tech beat the Diamond Heels on Sunday to capture its first conference crown since 2014, scoring 13 runs of its own.
If UNC wants to host a Super Regional for the second-consecutive season, starting pitching has to be on its game. Jason DeCaro struggled Friday against Virginia Tech, Ryan Lynch only tossed four innings against Pitt on Saturday, while Folger Boaz gave up six runs on Sunday.
North Carolina knows how to beat tough competition, as evidenced by its regular season with several ranked wins. The Diamond Heels will prepare through this week, then start their NCAA Tournament journey on Friday.
Let's take a look at social media and see reactions to UNC's draw.

TOUGH draw for the Diamond Heels
I’d argue this is the second time in three years that UNC got screwed as a Top 5 seed.
This is lowkey a group of death. Ridiculous. https://t.co/E8mual6tJd
