GOSHEN — A shot at a division championship is within reach for the soccer standouts of Goshen City FC.
With a 5-0 victory Saturday against the Holland Rovers in Saugatuck, Michigan, Goshen City is now 7-2-0 with one match remaining in the regular season — 6 p.m. Saturday against 1927SC at the Fort Wayne Soccer Club, 3102 Ardmore Ave.
Goshen City, which is 8-3-0 for 2026 including the Amateur Cup in April and early May, has produced 21 points and is in first place in the Midwest Premier League’s West Division.
Tulip City United (19 points) is in second place and has a home match at 7 p.m. Saturday against Midwest United FC.
A win for Goshen City at 1927SC will clinch the regular season title. If Goshen City ties, Tulip City United would have to win by two goals or more to secure the division championship.
A Goshen City loss and Tulip City win gives Tulip City the crown outright.
In the event of a tie in the standings, Tulip City United holds the tiebreaker by virtue of a 1-0 win against Goshen City.
The West Division winner will play the East Division winner (likely FC Pontiac of Michigan) for the overall Great Lakes title. The date — July 25 or July 26 — is to be determined and the site will be an away match if Goshen City is involved.
In 2025, Goshen took the Great Lakes championship with a 2-1 victory against Cedars FC in Fordson High School in Dearborn, Michigan.
Goshen City netted all of its goals against Holland in the second half. The first two came from Brazilian and Goshen College player Pedro Diegues with two more by Concord High School Class of 2026’s Yurem Castro and one by Goshen High School coach of 2026 and Ashland (Ohio) University’s Hayden Clark.
With Ben Kenn back in Portugal, Japan’s Torai Matsumoto and Elkhart High School Class of 2027’s Karter Lopez shared goalkeeper duties.
On the season, individual goals (counting Amateur Cup games) belong to Westview Class of 2024 and Grace College’s Teague Misner (5), Diegues (4), Tito Sanchez (3), Castro (2), Joao Laranjo (2), Javier Enciso (2), Joshua Cruz (2), Miguel Lourenco (2), Clark (1), Iker Fernandez (1), Julian Saldivar (1) and Ricardo Garcia (1).
On the season, Goshen City has scored 21 goals and has allowed eight with four shutouts.
Goshen City head coach Tyler Born has witnessed an improvement on defense from 2025 to 2026.
“Last year we only had two clean sheets the entirety of the year,” said Born, who became head coach for the 2024 Goshen City FC season. “It was a big focus for me and being able to recruit guys that would improve our defensive numbers.
“I feel like we are more organized this year with our defensive shape and making sure we’re shutting down teams before they even get close to our goal. We’re trying to press really high, win the ball back and create more (offensive) chances that way.
“Last year, we did it here and there. This year it has been fairly consistent.”
Born said the Orange and Black plays with a lot of energy and applies his pressure to opponents.
“The way that I like to do things is to create more chances and prevent a lot more chances on the other end.”
The most goals Goshen City has allowed in a match is three in a 3-1 loss to Midwest United.
With many players heading back to college or high school, the 2026 season is drawing to a close for Goshen City.
Born said the team gathered early this year and trained for two weeks leading into the Amateur Cup.
He said he anticipates that the 2027 season will be played May through July.
Goshen City FC was founded in the spring of 2022. The team went 5-2-3 in 2023, 7-3-2 in 2024 and 8-3-1 in 2025.
